Chapter 1&2 Reflections

Chapter 1
This first chapter focuses on the evolution of typography. I thought it was very fascinating to be able to look at the very beginnings of written word, and compare it to what we have today. Long ago, it took a lot of time and effort to make just one letter, which made me realize how much we take our technology today for granted. I feel like a lot of people have forgotten the beauty and art of typography due to these advancements, and should study the beginnings of typography in order to re appreciate it. I also thought it was very interesting to take a look at some of the people that designed the fonts we still use today, and the processes they took in order to perfect them. Every event in history is is recorded in some way shape or form using typography, and not only do the words tell a story, but the constant development of the letters themselves tell a story as well. A lot of the different typefaces created were not much different from each other, but the small changes they possess evoke a different feeling and mood entirely. From now on I am going to make sure I pay attention to the way a font portrays a message, not just by reading the words but by taking note of the shape, boldness, and other details. I also think it would be very cool to try and create my own unique take on a certain font, and see what its really like to make one.

Chapter 2
This chapter talks about the anatomy of typography. It is interesting how it mentions that different letters can be combined in hundreds of thousands of ways to create different words, but I also think it is fascinating that you could also combine the many characteristics of the different typefaces, and make hundreds of different fonts. I was also very interested in the fact that it is such a different process to handwrite a certain font, rather than type it out on a computer. We often don't pay attentions to the many different details of the different fonts because we don't have to, but I am going to try and make an effort to do this from now on in order to get to know the fonts better. Back when the different fonts were all made by hand, the smallest change in something like the tool that is used to draw the font could make the biggest difference. For example there is noticeable change in the same font being recorded with a reed pen, a brush, and a chisel. Another thing I am going to make sure to pay attention to is the different terms that are used for each of the differentiating characteristics of the fonts. I had no clue what the short strokes were that extend from a letter, but they are classified as serifs.
