Chapter 4 + 5

Chapter 4

Chapter 4 was widely centered around the concept of a Grid. About how Graphic designers and ultimately Typographers use the Grid in their work. It can be used to organize space and create formality in a paper's negative space. X:2X was talked about as a basic grid ratio, but personally I'm not sure if it is from personally experience. Grids aren't enclosed to just the basic square grid but can be informal with curves and diagonals. The golden section and fibonacci sequence are not what people typically associate with grids, yet mathematically it is a way to divide the space with equality. The book also stated that even simple single-column grids, although boring to some, still needs a lot of detail looking into it for it to look subjectively "nice". Choosing a Grid involves a lot of different variables. How much content you are looking to put into a page or what is the purpose of the pamphlet are only two of the questions that must be answered in the process of choosing a grid and how ever columns you are using in such grid.

Chapter 5
Chapter 5 was about typographic syntax. I'll be honest, i was pretty lost in the subject in grasping the concepts. Syntax definition is the "arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language". Therefore Typographic syntax must be the rules of typographic design to create words/ sentences on the page. Taking in the rules of lines, columns, margins, letter and word. Although I feel as though the text didn't outright state rules.
