Chapter 4 and 5 Reflection

Chapter 4

The grid "a skeletal framework used by designers to organize information within a spatial field." It, overall, provides a strategy for when someone needs to place text and visuals in two- and three-dimensional spaces. There was a lot of programming and experimentation that went into developing this system. The chapter mentioned how we should think of a letter or type as a point in space, the extension of a point as a line in space, and the extension of a line as a plane in space. I remember learning point, line, and planes in GD 105, and to relate it to typography is very interesting. I never thought about the directional elements type has and how they are proportionate to space movement. There are so many ways in which grids can be used, and throughout history, graphic designers have created successful grid performances.

Chapter 5

Aside from typographic anatomy, there is also typographic syntax. Typographic syntax is basically the elements of design (letter, word, line, column, margins, etc) that are made into a cohesive whole through the use of space, visuals, form, and grids. Overall, through typographic syntax, we are able to speak the language of design. Even two very different letterforms can form to become a cohesive sign.
