Chapter 7 Reflection

When I first started to read Chapter 7, I knew that old type was printed onto paper through hand composition. However, to read and see how it was developed and how it used is crazy to me. Having paper print within seconds really spoils us, even having type just appear on a web page instantly is a huge evolution from how type was originally displayed. When I see how hand composition is stamped down on paper makes me think about really old newspaper. How the headline was HUGE, but the actual body was super tiny and were bulbs on the paper.

The chapter continues to describe the Linotype machine. It was developed in 1886 and was used to press down single brass matrix keys onto overhead magazines. It would also split the magazine into ninety vertical channels. This was the beginning to how newspaper and magazines were developed. This was the beginning on how current events were spread throughout the city. Without the development of the Linotype machine, how would people hear about the current events happening around them? It was not just a revolutionary step towards an era of technology, but also the media. The book displays many images of what the Linotype machine looked like, and I just keep thinking back to todays prints. How small and simple of a shape it has, yet it essentially does the exact same thing.
